Key ingredients

Fluoride toothpaste is the gold standard for strengthening teeth and preventing tooth decay. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste makes teeth significantly harder and more resistant to plaque acids. We recommend a 1000ppm fluoride toothpaste for children under 6 and anyone with a low risk of decay, and a 1490ppm fluoride toothpaste for anyone 6 and older who is at a medium to high risk of tooth decay.

Xylitol is a natural substance derived from corn cobs. Used in toothpaste, it prevents plaque bacteria sticking to your teeth. This means your teeth won’t get that “fuzzy” feeling by the end of the day. It’s tastes sweet but can’t cause tooth decay the way sugar can.

Calcium carbonate is a naturally occurring mineral with a high pH. In toothpaste, it’s used as a gentle abrasive to polish the teeth and remove plaque. Solid’s toothpastes have a RDA of around 70, which means they are gentle on enamel.

The taste of your toothpaste is important. It’s what makes you look forward to brushing! We custom blend our own flavours with natural peppermint oil, spearmint oil, cinnamon oil, orange oil and lemon oil. Strawberry oil isn’t a thing, so this flavour also includes a foodsafe lab made component.

Other ingredients

Coconut oil is used as a softening agent and flavour enhancer for our toothpaste tablets and toothpaste. It may also have a mild antibacterial activity. Our coconut oil is sustainably harvested from the Pacific Islands. It is used at a very low concentration, so there is no danger of our toothpaste contributing to fatbergs in drains.

Glycerin is a safe and widely used humectant/moisturiser. Our glycerin is derived from coconut and is palm-free.

Acacia gum is a natural plant-based gum that helps to hold our toothpaste tablets together.

Menthol is naturally derived from mint, and is responsible for that lovely, cold mouthfeel we get after brushing. In cold weather you might see it crystallising on your tablets.

Monk fruit is a sweet-tasting fruit that contains powerful antioxidants called mogrosides. Monk fruit can inhibit the growth of oral bacteria that cause tooth decay and periodontal disease.

Potassium nitrate is used in our sensitive toothpastes. Potassium salts can block pain messages from teeth from reaching the brain, effectively reducing sensitivity.

Used at less than 5% in our toothpaste in a jar, and is not present in our tablets or powder. We steam distill tap water to reduce our plastic use behind the scenes.

Sodium bicarbonate is great at neutralising odours. It also helps creates an alkaline oral environment to allow teeth to remineralise. You might have heard that baking soda is abrasive to teeth, but there is no scientific evidence showing this is true.

Sodium citrate is the sodium salt of citric acid and occurs naturally in citrus fruits. We use sodium citrate as a stabiliser and pH adjuster.

A sprinkle of plain old table salt. Used as flavour enhancer.

Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate is an extremely mild eco-friendly cleansing and foaming agent. Most toothpastes contain the similar-sounding sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). This is what creates all the foam in typical toothpaste. We avoid SLS as it can cause mouth ulcers and irritation in some people.

Plant based gums that give our toothpaste the correct consistency.

Ingredients we left out

Solid is a proudly palm oil free brand.

Solid is proud to be vegan friendly.

No Solid toothpaste or oral care contains sugar. Neither do Colgate or Sensodyne toothpastes. You might find sugar or honey in some natural or earthy style toothpastes – we recommend avoiding these ingredients.

Solid oral care is gluten free, and our facility does not manufacture any gluten containing products.

Stevia has a very noticeable and unpleasant aftertaste, so we do not use it.

This is what creates all the foam in typical toothpaste. We’ve left out the SLS as it can cause mouth ulcers and irritation in some people.
